Ah, but did they use "alien bamboo?"

Seriously, why the heck didn't Kirk just make a bomb, and lob it at the Gorn, well before the slow moving critter got anywhere close to him? Obviously, the bamboo makes an EXCELLENT bomb...

Or maybe the trick should have been to get the Gorn to build the cannon, while Kirk taunted him (a la French folk in Monty Python and the Holy Grail) to fire the weapon, thus vaporizing the menace?
