I only got 30 seconds into it. I cant stand performers in front of live audiences singing into the camera.

Good question. I don't think, to my recollection, that was every fully explored in TOS or the preceding films. I'm certain that there are other's that are more fully knowledged in Trek than I am (on a scale of 1 - 10, with 1 being a Trek Novice and 10 being Commander of Star Fleet, I'd give myself a 7.5...being generous).

Since I'm playing catch up on the forums, by time I continue reading, I'm sure somone would have already answered this question.
