Memory is cheap for what you get and near the top of the list in purchasing priorities, only behind the mb+cpu. If you plan to stick with 32-bit XP/Vista or get Windows 7 then buy 4GB... which is the max you can use. It makes a world of difference. Get a mb that can handle at least 8 in case you go with a 64-bit system in the future... either Windows64 or if you want to fool around with Linux.
I dont know what 500 Euros will get you. But depending on what you want to do with your computer if you are on a tight budget think about a good AMD processor. Much better deals than Intel and work just as good if not better. I have a dual-core and I'm very happy with it. However if you are a gamer and ever plan to use nVidia+SLI then Intel is the only game in town. Depending on how old your current system is, make sure your current power supply will handle everything. Check wattage/amps/rails and the proper power connections. There are sites around that will accept your proposed system (and any potential upgrades like a 2nd hard drives) and tell you how much power you will need. One 'gotcha' that some people miss is that most motherboards nowadays only have IDE channels for 2 devices. My last system had 2HD+DVDR+CDR. Two of them had to go so I kept the HD (which went into a USB case) and DVDR then I had to get a new SATA HD. It doesnt sound like you will be changing much except the basics but better to be sure about absolutely everything before spending any money. Also, again depending on budget, dont skimp on things and build it so you wont have to do any upgrades in a year or two.

I just threw the link out there to bump the thread, it's an excellent MB but nothings been posted about the original PC yet. I've owned AMD and Intel and besides money you need to take into consideration what you intend to do with the comp. AMD's strongest point was gameplay but they've lost that edge to the Intel Core2 Duo which has since been outclassed by the I7 chip. But the release of the I7 has dropped Core 2 prices to very affordable levels. If your into audio/video an Intel is still the way to go as they have always led AMD in this field and still do. But AMD is very good hardware and going that route isn't going wrong.

Thats good then. Getting things like a new quiet power supply and a good CPU cooler is a smart investment. My last ps got really noisy with age and needed to go. Actually it always was noisy. It just got more so... and I really really really appreciate the reduced noise now. Its still there of course but I dont feel like I'm standing in front of a 747.
