Default DS9 Blueprints

These are early ideas..

One early draft of DS9 had the docking pylons facing outward rather than inward.

Another had it looking more like an oil-rig in space, with the backstory that it wasn't Cardassian-built but was constructed with bits and pieces from various races across the region.

You know, when watching it sometimes I did think that it would surely make more sense in the 'real' world to have the docking ports face outwards.

It provides more room for large ships to dock and have more free space around them. Less room for collisions etc

Everytime we saw a Galaxy docked it seemed to take over the whole area. Thanks for the links!

Yep. An "in-universe" idea, however, might be that DS9 (or rather, Terok Nor) wasn't originally built to accommodate anything larger than a Cardassian freighter or attack ship (both considerably smaller than a Galaxy-class).
