Yeah, the Klingon/Romulan switcheroo - I think there have been a few examples over the years when a script revision or double-check would have eliminated what later became burning issues in the past.

Regarding the definition of Starfleet/Federation - Sisko gives a pretty good explanation in one of second season eps 'Battlelines', I think. I can't remember it exactly, but it was one of the few times it was stated onscreen.

Also, I think it was in the TOS series bible that McCoy joined Starfleet to escape the pain of his bitter divorce, so at least that rang true even if the origins of his nickname didn't. I always thought it came from 'sawbones'.

But, I took it as, even with this new universe, that some things were eneviatble, like McCoy's nickname. Even if it took a diffrent path to get there.
