Well, I read up to six pages, then got bored.
So if what I'm about to say has been said already, then boo-hoo.

I really don't think putting a gay reference in this movie is necessary...
But, perhaps someone 'friendly' in the sequel(s), wouldn't be a bad idea. (I always
thought Barclay would have been a good gay character.)
We can't possibly satisfy EVERY demographic in what we're hoping to be the greatest
prequel ever. Next, the transexuals will be wanting their spot.

Garak was omnisexual... remember his approaches towards Bashir?

I forgot about Garak....but I'm not a huge DS9 fan, so maybe I can be forgiven.

Jerhanner, there is definitely good slash out there.

George Takei himself said he was very surprised to read in the script that Sulu had a daughter. His reaction was something like "When did that happen?!"

I don't think it had anything to do with him begin gay necessarily, he just never got that parental information about his own character until he read it in the script. Apparently even more ironic to him since during TOS he'd often requested to give more background to his character, but was almost always turned down. Then suddenly they give him a daughter out of the blue simply as a plot point. A shame Sulu didn't get better treatment.

Then you don't know about the Miles/Bashir 'relationship'?
A lot of people like to really dig into their closeness...
They would have been a good couple, I think.

Had DS9 continued beyond seven seasons I think a Bashir/O'Brien romantic relationship would have been perfectly logical and the natural next step for both of them. It would have been very interesting to explore.

Why this obsession that some people have about putting gay people in Star Trek?!

Maybe they will be. Maybe they won't. But in all honesty, it doesn't matter if the characters aren't gay. Because presumably in a more enlightened society, sexual orientation would no longer be an issue.

What would suck the most is if they put in a gay character for the sake of putting in a gay character.

(ps. I still think that Bashir & O'Brien are much better as being friends. Because you don't get that many relationships in fiction especially sci-fi where two people are really good friends - and stay as really good friends without suddenly becoming romantically involved. To be honest, the road to romance becomes more than a little cliched on occasion. Friendship is a far better "relationship" to explore.)
