Personally, I think he was the star of the show. He was one of the main reasons my family enjoyed the series so much.

He was just the new concept. What had not been done before in that detail. I get that people liked him (it). However, it is clear the captain was the star per the story lines.

I personally think The Doctor was an important part of the show, history proves that. He was initially supposed to be very minor, but the fans really loved him. As far as him being THE star, I couldn't disagree more. Captian Janeway, in my opinion was the anchor of the show, as, I guess, she should have been. I find that every single major cast member had some great things to contribute, but Janeway, week after week, turned in a stellar preformance. The Doctor was very good, and added to the show, but there were times he GRATED on me so badly. At times, nothing seemed to be good enough for him, he always seemed to be crying for more. Case in point "Author Author" where he writes a novel, it is a perfect example of how he felt so put upon by everyone else in spite of all the liberties Captian Janeway gave him. Most of the time though, I loved him!!!

The Doctor filled the "Data" spot in VOY.

Who in turn filled the "Spock" spot. Ergo... The Doctor = Spock?

The doctor was the de rigeur 'let's use a non-human character to explore what it means to be human' role that goes back to Spock.

Only infinitely less interesting.

I voted no, and I agree with what's been said that he's A stay rather than the star.

IMO, it's not individual characters so much as how pairs or trio's interact. Examples being Kirk/Spock/McCoy, obviously, individually are good characters, but when thrust together like in Galileo 7 and City on the edge of Forever are stars and bounce off each other to produce good shows. Similarly with Picard and Data or Picard and Worf, O'Brien and Bashir, Janeway and Seven, Seven and The Doctor, Archer and Trip etc.
