Star Trek IV: Save the Whales did set the example that a good Trek story could be told with a minimum of character injury/fatality, things going boom, and shots being fired. However, to me, that was an episode. A damn good one, to be sure, but an episode nonetheless.

Star Trek IV also proved that Chekov need not scream.

Yes, something like IV would be my dream. They've used WoK as a model often enough now...
