In every movie a ship was needed to varying degrees, space battles or not. #1 to go meet Vger, #2 to battle Khan, #3 to go get Spock, #4 to go get the whales, #5 to go to the end of the universe, #6 to go meet the Klingons, be blamed for attacking them, and to ultimately save the day... and onwards. Also, since we are talking about movies and not TV the ship must be involved in some way.

But it had a ship to get the job done. It would been the same story if they chose not to off Enterprise in #3

Well, it's been done -- I don't recall whether it's been done in Star Trek, but...

They wake up amnesiac in San Francisco circa 1941. Sulu is seized and taken to an internment camp for Japanese-Americans. Kirk and McCoy are both beat cops. No sign of Spock. Chekov is a foreign correspondent for a Moscow paper, part of an exchange program that had foreign correspondent Walter Duranty in Moscow, but Chekov is Duranty's counterpart over here. Uhura is assigned by the San Francisco Chronicle to be Chekov's translator. At a public launch of a new Naval battleship that Montgomery Scott worked on as part of the U.S./U/K. lend-lease program, with Kirk and McCoy keeping the crowd under control and while Chekov and Uhura are on scene for the paper, a Starfleet shuttlecraft buzzes the ship and the crowd, piloted by Spock. Our Starfleet crew's memories are triggered by the sight of the shuttle but they don't regain them fully. The story kicks into gear with them trying to puzzle out who they are, what they have in common and the meaning of the impossible aircraft they saw -- to figure it out, they go looking for Spock and then have to free Sulu all the while trying to figure out how to get home.

but would it be acceptable to audiences if Enterprise was missing?
I've been thinking that she is a major character after all.
would we be satisfied after a movie if she only returned in the last few minutes after waiting two or three years bewtween movies.

The conclusion to my idea is, they get her back at the end -- looking better than in XI. Their actions in the 1940s timeframe "straighten out" their course in the timeline and put them closer to the Prime universe.

Nope. It would never work. ESPECIALLY not in this JJ action, all flash, and no substance Trek universe. Nope. We are likely going to see MORE space battles and more ship porn. I really don't mind that, in fact I'll probably enjoy it, but I want more to think about next time.
