I wish the DVD would include Countdown. After all. Countdown is a OFFICIAL prequel to Star Trek.

Countdown wasn't filmed, maybe it should have been, but then it would be a 4 hour movie.

Now, that would have been something worth seeing. And I think what MagaditH means is that it was written by Star Trek producers Damon Lindeloff and Roberto Orci. So, I think it is official in terms of their story and all. It's actually what makes the new film complete.

Countdown should have been filmed first. It would have made sense but that would have meant contracting some of TNG cast to tie it in and you know THAT wasn't going to happen!

I still think the most relevant parts of Countdown could have been integrated into the film without the presence of any TNG actors or lingering in the 24th Century.

All that was needed was a more fleshed out flashback sequence.

I agree it could have been done that way but then fans would yell "cheat!", right?

Well, I can only speak for myself, but I can say I wouldn't have been. To my mind although they had a function in some of Countdown, the TNG characters had absolutely no place in this film itself.

I did not want them in it.

But, yes, that opinion wouldn't be everyone's and they may feel cheated.
