Between my two PC drives and two external drives I have never run out of room. I think between them all its 320+80+80+20. But then I dont have huge amounts of media like DVD-rips. I never saw the benefit of doing that because most of the time I never watch DVDs rentals more than once or twice anyways. At most I buy maybe 1 per year. However if you are any kind of animator and video editor lots of space it essential.

As far an external drive absolutely. Get one that is big enough for both a dedicated partition for complete laptop backup and extra for more data. I do my backup at least once a month for my laptop. More often when there are major changes. Also, do some research and get the parts yourself, both a recommended case and drive. Its easy to build and allows for more choices.

Finding a plug is usually not a big deal, but what about the times you are on a long road trip and sitting in the backseat of a car? Or out on a park bench catching up on some work? You have to rely on battery power in those situations.
