I'm sure it's an extra-type role. Most Star Trek fans I've ever met wouldn't be able to pick him out of a crowd. Cameos are typically reserved for people the audience could easily identify, ala Christian Slater in TUC who (at the time) was a big star.

The ship has a large crew. J.J. said he wanted the film to feel as real as possible like James Cameron did with Titanic. Remember he built a whole replica of the liner. They have a new article over at trekmovie.com. Trouble with Tribbles writer David Gerrod visited the set on Paramounts largest stage Stage 18 by invite from Abrams and he said there was the largest humongeus set he had ever seen hanging from the rafters which he said he couldn't beleive they were holding it up. Of course he had to sign a non disclosure contract so thats all he could say. I wonder what it was. That stage is where they filmed the recreation deck scenes in TMP where the crew was present when Kirk showed them what they were facing with V'Ger. That is why they have to keep on hiring actors and this film is suppose to be epic like Ben Hur or Gladiator.

Chris Doohan is on screen, introduces himself, and then gives the disclaimer that this movie was shot in 2007-2008 and that it will not be a 60's throwback.

Right. But I think we will be seeing more than just one ship. There was this other heroic Star Fleet Captain announced, which pleased me tremendously. I think this will be full of suspense. At least the thing begins to look promising for me.

While we don't know TrekMovie's source, they were quite confident saying that Tahir's unnamed captain character would indeed command a ship not previously seen in TREK. Don't know if this implies a different class, or different design, or prototype, etc. If TM's source is right, we'll see at least one new ship.
