Question ST Novel: Captain's Glory (need help)

I don't know if I'm in the right section for this thread but if not, the mods can move it if they want to.

I've just started reading the book "Captain's Glory". So far I'm enjoying it except for the name of Kirk's ship, the "Belle Rêve", which makes me cringe every time I see it because it should be "Beau Rêve" (just another example of an author who bends the rules of a foreign language to suit his needs and comes off as very sloppy in the process). But I digress...

So to anyone who has read this book, my question is this: can you explain to me how Kirk and his crew can be living in the same timeline as Picard, Riker and Janeway? I guess there was a book which came before "Captain's Glory" that explained how it happened but I don't know which one and so far it hasn't been explained in this one. And it bugs me...

It was in Shatner's first trilogy... "The Return" (his second book)
Renegade Romulans have made up an alliance with the Borg, trying to destroy the Federation (what else ). To accomplish that, they want to use their worst enemy - Kirk. The Romulans take his body from Veridian III and revive it using Borg nano technology (Frankenstein? ). Then they "reprogram" him so that he kills Picard...
The only good part is the scene with Data and Geordi on the ice planet, where Data still has to get along with his feelings... he's like a teenager and even starts to weep and freezes his eyes this way - so he uses a phaser to get rid of the ice on his eyes

OMG, sounds like a really bad TNG-TOS crossover! LOL! Hopefully, this one won't be as bad. I think I'm going to go read the reviews on Amazon.com before I get into it any further because I don't want to waste my time reading something rancid.

Hummph... Now that you mention it, I remember someone speaking of nano technology to try and bring back Kirk from the dead so he could be in the new movie... *shakes head*

And thank you very much for the info, I really appreciate it!
