If I recall correct, then the deflector dish of the refit-Enterprise worked simmillar, at least in The Motion Picture. It changed collor from gold to blue or vice versa when the ship engaged its warp drive.

I'll have to go back and watch, but the only time I remember it being gold was when they were preparing to leave spacedock. Almost like it was warming up, so to speak.... As the Enterprise approached V'Ger, as well as inside and at the end when the Enterprise was in Earth orbit, the dish was blue then as well...

actually in TMP and one of the other movies, you see the dish being gold after it being blue earlier, so it's not just the dish warming up from being turned off.

See, this is one of those things I noticed on my very first viewing, but missed on my second viewing. As a matter of fact, I had totally forgotten about it! Go figure.

Yeah I noticed it the first time I saw it. I thought it was neat and fun to look at, but from a technical perspective, it's one of the few things that I truly do not care for. External moving parts a such a pain to deal with if the mechanism is damaged or jammed. Of course, strictly speaking if anything were to happen to the deflector dish you'd probably have to do a EVA anyway, but this does add one more thing to have to worry about.
