I only disagree on your statement that Kirk does not think, what would happen if? He usually keeps it to himself but there are some moments where he expresses his concern, doubts and the burden of responsibility.

Well, now we've SEEN Pike, so what did you think?

I feel that the transition from Pike to Kirk via promotion was insane personally. But, Bruce did an excellent job with the character, perhaps showing a more spirited Pike before losing so many of his crew at Rigel before we saw him in The Cage.
