Smile Lindelhof Helped Inspire Giacchino's Approach to Trek's Soundtrack, Report Claims

In a larger piece about the success of Michael Giacchino, a Los Angeles Times article claims that the composer had run into a creative roadblock while writing the soundtrack to Star Trek when he received a suggestion from producer Damon Lindelhof that helped inspire the movie's musical themes.

It's incredible, if anyone else remembers, even Jerry Goldsmith hit a roadblock in the scoring for TMP, when the producers told him his first theme sounded too much like "sailing ships". Since the new star Trek soundtrack is my new second favorite (second only to Goldsmith's score for TMP) I would say that Giacchino has succeeded in creating one of the best musical scores Trek has ever known, with the ironic twist of having had the same trouble with the scoring process that Goldsmith had.

If you're curious to hear what I meant by Jerry Goldsmith's "first theme":
"To boldly go where no man has gone before"
