It really felt like to me that this new movie had a plot like The Motion Picture did. The Narada looked like VGER, The redesigned Enterprise looked like the one in the Motion Picture, The klingon vessels getting wiped out and most shocking seeing the narada over earth looked exactly like the VGER attacking earth. JJ Abrams did say that he loved the first motion picture so much that he wanted to use some of the contexts from that movie to this one. no wonder why it looked so familar.

I don't see it that way. Nods to TMP, perhaps, but I didn't get a sense of a remake.

![]() ![]() No kidding; almost got whiplash from those endless scenes of cruising through the cloud....then the alien ship....then..... ![]() That bit of silliness aside, I really see no likeness between the Narada and V'ger. Or anything else between the two films, really. As stated earlier, small....very small nods perhaps; nothing more. |

I can see some of the similar plot devices...however, I've never considered TMP a remake. (Yes, yes, I know why some folks call it that...)
With the new film's Prime and it's own timelines...this film isn't a mere remake either, but it's closer to my concept of a remake than TMP is.

I do agree that XI follows a similar plot, but only in a loose sense.
I wouldn't call it a remake though.

TMP and Trek XI are night and day... I think the only homage scene that I would consider is the shot where Kirk and McCoy see the Big E in space.

Superficially, yes. A lightning storm in space. For me, TMP is the penultimate Trek film, I watched it again after seeing Star Trek (2009). I didn't feel they were similar at all. TMP was much deeper, it felt like 'classic' Trek, but for the big screen. Star Trek (2009) didn't have the same feel to it, it felt more like a fast-moving roller coaster ride. Star Trek (2009) actually borrows from several films, not just TMP, someone noted the similarities with Nemesis, also the torture scene with Captain Pike reminds one of the torture scene in TWOK.

So in fact Vger was a Romulan who wanted revenge instead of becoming one with God?
