Still searching the Internet for box office figures from Japan. I hope the news is good.
Also, I believe Trek's opening in Mexico was delayed by the H1N1 (swine flu) virus scare. |

So what is rousing applause indicative of? A bit of a cultural paradigm shift in Japan, perhaps?

Star Trek opened in Japan in 4th place with $2.2 million over the weekend. Not bad, not great. A Japanese film called "Rookies" (baseball drama) was #1, "Angels & Demons" #2, and Japanese film that's been running for a few weeks called "April Bride" (romance) was #3, and "Star Trek" was #4.
How well it does from here out will probably be word-of-mouth and what opens over the next two weeks. Last edited by Robert Saint John : 06-01-2009 at 07:13 AM. |

I think, generally, the Japanese consider themselves a far more disciplined people. They're kinda like the Vulcans of planet Earth. In recent years, it would seem they've loosened up. Now, I'm trying to remember (this is a tangent of sorts) if this had to do with China or Japan, but back in the 80's the pop duo "WHAM" was going to do a show in one of those countries, but were going to back out when they found out that the audiences they were going to perform for were not going to be allowed to dance in the aisles/seats. They told that government that they would not play there unless their fans were allowed to have fun and dance if they wanted to.
