There is also a scene, slightly later, with a blonde haired nurse, though we only see her from behind. I wondered if this was Chapel?

Maybe she was the sexy blond wearing the white mini skirt outfit that walked in front of the camera as McCoy brings Kirk into sickbay and Kirk looks and says something to her like Hellooo baby.

I'm pretty sure that was supposed to be her. She's the one that scanned Captain Pike as Kirk helped him step off the transporter pad.

So, she's not even a secondary character? She was like an extra? WTF? It was nurse Chapel that was supposed to have the hots for Spock, was we see in "The Naked Time" episode of TOS. But now he's hooking up with Uhura. This Alternate Reality screws Chapel up big time.

Only if you see her as a doe-eyed love interest for Spock more than anything else. There are plenty of story possibilities that could be much meatier for her and you might not care about the lack of the Spock thing. I truly truly truly hope they dont do the love interest anyways to make the fans happy... and by extension a love triangle. Ugh!

Chapel always was and will be a third tier character at best.
She only gained importance in the series because Roddenberry was sleeping with Majel while cheating on his wife before finally divorcing her after a few years of that. He had already moved on from Nichelle Nichols, but it did get her a placement on the show.

Roddenberry tried to push Majel's studio frowned-upon stardom up a notch by making her more of a focus, and the series suffered for it.

But, it was the bosses' biatch so as an actor you played ball.
