I always thought that the Federation is based on voluntary membership instead of expansionism. Perhaps the Federation grew faster in the border regions than the Klingon Empire and that's why they were so annoyed?

Voluntary expansion + Aggressive colonization=Trouble.

Those dossiers seem to have inconsistent facts.

In the movie the Enterprise was struggling to get to Warp 4. But in the dossier is says that it can reach Warp 8.

Enterprise was damaged in the battle with the Narada at Vulcan.

Spock briefly speaks of Engineering crews repairing numerous radiation leaks in Engineering as one of the reasons he can't order Engineering to increase the Warp yield to catch up with the Narada.

That's the general description of a cruiser in Starfleet, IMO. The Miranda-class generally falls into that category.

The Kelvin could have been a medium cruiser, while the Enterprise might have been designated a heavy cruiser...

It used to be, then the NX-01 got sucked into a wormhole and got stuck in the past, and then an alternate universe was created. Then the NX-01 in the alternate universe past went back through the wormhole and encountered the Prime NX-01 in the present(during the show) and gave the Prime NX-01 the technology to reach Warp 7.

It's a really confusing episode.
