Three times at my local theater on a regular screen and twice this weekend in IMAX. My sis and I went down the shore to Atlantic City, NJ just so we could get the best IMAX screen possible in the Tropicana casino. Their theater is all new and pretty and plush. Fortunately, we found a room overnight on Friday there for only $109 but it's a little sad that, by and large, the whole point of the trip was just to see the movie twice in IMAX. I can't believe she agreed to it! We budgeted our paychecks carefully to do it. I've never gone this far for a movie before, let alone seen one so many times in the theater.

Ah well, Star Trek is worth it.

We did help stimulate NJ's economy by losing a couple hundred dollars on the penny slots, though.

I don't quite see Pine as Kirk from the O.S. But, then again, he wasn't intended to be, with the whole Alternate Reality thing creating a different Kirk. One whose Dad dies before he was born leading to disfunctional relationships with booze and women with no father figure around. I also don't see him as heroic yet. In the movie he's more reckless than heroic, and more thrill-seeking than inspired.

I was a bit edgy at first and wasn't really fired up until about 1/2 way into the movie. I thought Pine at that point threw a few bones to Bill Shatner with a bit of the movement, pose and prose of the Kirk most of us knew and loved. Pine hit almost a perfect balance of not mimicking Shatner, but making sure that character was still there.

I would of liked to have seen just a smudge more of the Shatner Kirk, but hey it's Pine Kirk now. So I was thankful he gave me as much as he did, if that makes sense.

No you're quite right.

In a timeline where the future has irreversibly altered the past, Pine-Kirk doesn't have to mimic Shatner-Kirk.

Yeah, we like to take periodic trips to AC (it's close) and when we can afford it, Las Vegas (haven't been in two years- too expensive and we have bills to pay! I was able to go to The Star Trek Experience like four times because of it.). At least we only play the penny slots! And it does help NJ's economy, so it's not a complete waste of time.

In IMAX, I noticed the cute fuzz on Chris Pine's tummy (his *ahem* Happy Trail) when Spock throws him over the console just before he tries to choke him. I was very pleased.

I loved Pine. He had a raw edgy energy, like a caged tiger, but very amusing at the same time. I also liked the fact that he had been brought somewhat up-to-date, his addressing the ensign in the bar as "Cupcake" had a very loose, metrosexual air about it, giving the impression of a man at ease with his own sexuality and the potential sexuality/ties of others. His attitude to Spock and Uhura on the transporter seemed to back this up, he was genuinely interested and engaged rather than huffy, judgmental or jealous. I would like to see a little more of this openess in trek.

Thanks for the comments, ladies on the "happy trail" I shall keep my eyes peeled for it on the DVD!

Pine was superb. Before I actually saw the movie, I really thought he was going to get overshadowed by Zachary Quinto's Spock. But I was pleasantly surprised that it felt evenly balanced between the two personalities. I was also amazed by his comic timing. It was perfect! I am looking forward to seeing how he matures as a captain.
