Default Pine was awesome, but what about Chris Hemsworth?

The lad who played George Kirk?

I felt he looked a little more mature and more like Shatner.

Could he have worked as James instead?

His version of George Samuel Kirk looked a lot like the TOS Kirk. Ironic that we have two actors with the same first name and playing father and son. They almost look alike, which made it believable.

I think he'd have been too mature looking to have pulled it off. Chris Pine was the perfect fit for the role IMO.

He makes a nice bridge between Shat and Pine since he looks enough like both of them.

Pine made Kirk cool. Kirk was one role they couldn't look at TOS too closely. Shat's performance has been parodied and mocked too much for anyone to take it seriously in a new movie. The gent who played George Kirk did a great job, one of the best scenes. It felt truly emotional in a way trek has lacked for quite some time. Good on him really.

I thought Chris Hemsworth was a brilliant 'father that never was' - his few minutes of screen time are going to leave a definate impact on the franchise - he conveyed the ideals and 'tones' that Shatner's Kirk would have picked up from him had he lived, so yes, he is kinda a pseudo-Shatner

Chris Pine however was just a dynamo of energy, a perfect casting choice!

He was perfect for Kirk's father, for all the reasons listed. I don't think I would have liked him as James T Kirk as much.
