One thing to keep in mind is that there is a difference between shooting with digital and projecting it. Pretty much everything is transferred to digital for post production, certainly anything with SFX or green screens. So there is no pure 'film' production for bigger budget projects. I guess in some ways you could compare it between a very good CRT with an LCD.
As for better, for example there are some very very good digital cameras out there that cost a fortune with lenses that cost even more. $10k Nikons come to mind... with lenses also costing many thousands of dollars. But they still cannot beat large format film. Typically around 4x4 to 12x12 (or somewhere around that). Digital still doesnt quite match it on color reproduction, but its close.
I use top-end Canon pro and "prosumer" D-SLRs with multiple lenses at work.. and they are phenomenal. OT, I know, but they're pretty damn good.
