Won't an extra day and different screen numbers kind of mess up the comparison? Isn't that comparing apples to oranges? And why do the number of screen vary so much? I have never been to a theater that did NOT carry a new movie on opening night.

Are the 320 Imax screens that Star Trek will show on (and Wolverine won't) a factor? Does that get counted as part of the box office gross, does anyone know?

There's a couple of different things to consider, but yes Trek is opening at 3500 theatres vs 4,099 for Wolverine.

However theatre count is one thing. Screen count is another. The screen count can be higher than the theatre count (multiplexes etc that have 10 or more screens).

An extra day will give Trek an advantage in it's overall total, but it's 3 day weekend is still determinable against Wolverine - and is used as it's 'actual' opening weekend figure on sites such as Box Office Mojo.

As to why Wolverine has more theatres - I'm less aware of 'how' studios get cinemas to screen their films and in what numbers.

I would hope it counts!! It's not like very many people that watch it on Imax will be likely to watch it in a normal theater on opening weekend.

If it is included, do Imax showings cost more per ticket? If so, would that be counted as well?

Imax revenues are counted in the opening weekend but again, can be separately listed to gauge how it performs against other IMAX releases. So, say Trek has a $90 million opening. It can be determined that, say, $13 million of it came from IMAX.

Right...makes sense...Thanks!

And, IMAX tickets are more expensive, too, aren't they?

Okay, I thought the 3500 number WAS screens. Well now there are more unknown variables!!! Dang, I wonder if there are statistics kept that will show how many TICKETS were sold on opening weekend. That would be great comparison because it would eliminate a lot of things.
