Looks very tempting - quite a few familiar seeming touches (isolation, maybe some mental destabilisation, some 'bad computer' stuff, etc). It doesn't look astoundingly original and does appear to echo Solaris.

But then, that's what trailers do. It may well have far more up it's sleeve.

I'm a fan of both versions but as much as I appreciate European film sensibilities I prefer the Hollywood version of Solaris. I like slow-paced films as much...no, more than the next guy but in Tarkovsky's Solaris it takes sooooooo long to even get to space that its easy to forget your watching a science fiction film! I love Tarkovsky's films. The beautiful cinematography always make indelible impressions. The first of his films I ever saw was Nostalgia and it stayed on my mind for weeks after. My Criterion Collection dvd is very special to me.
But again I prefer the Clooney version of Solaris. How is it botched, IYP, omegaman?

If you've read the original novel by Lem, you know that neither film really does it justice. Solaris is an intelligent planet. An ocean "brain" that mankind keeps trying to communicate with... with mixed, ambiguious results. No one has captured the uncomfortable weirdness of that story, or the sheer frustration of trying to communicate with something so utterly alien. I think the Clooney version tells a more human story within the framework of the Solaris concept. The theme that "communication is difficult" seems well explored between Kelvin, and his suicidal wife.

I find the Clooney version a really good film, frankly. And it was a refreshing change from that summer's "slam bang" BS movies by Sommers or Bay. Finally! To go into a movie theatre and have my eyeballs seduced... instead of being mugged.

No. I've not yet gotten around to reading that novel or any Stanislav Lem. Been meaning to...for the last thirty years or so. I'll get to one day. Its only about #300 on my must read list. That 'communication is difficult' theme is one of several Solaris shares with 2001.

I've always seen 2001 as having two major themes: 1) evolution is being guided... and 2) an outward "trip" that takes us to the edge of infinity. It starts off with the dawn of man, and aliens monkey (pun) with our ability to survive... Then we move to the moon where we discover we are not alone... finally moving out to Jupiter, and being in conflict with our own intelligent creations... (HAL) and then a journey to the infinite, through the stargate, and we are evolved again... into a form with a better chance for survival... I guess you could say that 2001 was all about being "upward and outward."

I applaud you on accepting responsibility for that terrific pun... and agree with you wholely except for the bit about stargate.... i think i'll keep an eye on this movie.
