I know that it doesn't matter since this is an alternate universe. But that event was just not necessary. It was simply JJ Abrams' way of telling us fans, once and for all, that this is no longer "our" Star Trek. It's his. And he will do whatever the heck he darn well peases with it, regardless of the damage it does to the existing history of Star Trek as we know it. When he said he wasn't making this movie for Trek fans, he was serious.

Ok, I have heard that as a theory. Not as a fact. Can you provide a link to the clip/interview/review that verifies these events? However, I still intend to see how it plays out in the actual film before reaching a definite final conclusion over what Abrams has done.

It was told to me by a person who has seen the movie. the scene was described in very exact detail.
