Sorry, I was referencing 1990s Trek (not the overall franchise).

No doubting the popularity of TNG but even DS9/Voyager/Enterprise failed to quite hit TNG's level of popularity with wider crowds. Neither did Babylon 5 (the other show mentioned).

Going back to the first mention of the X-Files I'm just of the opinion that X-Files was never in Trek's shadow because they were about different things, not becaise Trek was so popular itself. But they did reach a huge level of popularity.

However it is undeniable that when it hit it's peak in the 1990s it hit as was as much a global phenomenon as Trek - but it burned out quicker. That said, burnout happened to Trek as well in the last few years, so it happens to everything eventually.

I didn't explain myself very well.
Let me say this.
TOS is the Trek that has actually had the impact on society. It is the one that even non-scifi people will sit down and watch. It is the one that pop culture references the most. it is the one that people respect.
to put it simply, people would prefer Kirk to be their captain, not Picard.
Star Wars is an adventure fantasy of good vs. evil and swashbuckling heroes.
Star Trek is a science fiction adventure of "the human condition".
The two frachises couldn't be more different.
The reason why the so-called 'rivalry' began, and they are so often wrongly compared, was because not long after Star Wars was released, ST:TMP got made and, both series continued in the early '80's. And they bith had the word "STAR" in their title. don't deny this people - you know mankind is that daft.
also, as was already pointed out by OneBuckFilms, Abrams was not putting Trek down, if he didn't respect it, why would he get involved.

If I had to pick I'd definitely side with Trek, but I think both franchises have a lot to offer and are very entertaining. As far as Trek being in the shadow of Star Wars...Trek's got a shiny new movie coming out, and Star Wars took a lot of heat for the prequels, so I'd say Trek's got the upper hand at the moment.

Besides, the Enterprise would SO beat the Death Star in battle, Enterprise has the same firepower as Death Star, but much more maneuverability. I know that has nothing to do with anything, but I thought I'd mention it while a Trek vs. Wars thread is going!

Looking at it that way, I agree. I don't think Star Wars will ever return to the huge level of popularity without another film (or trilogy). Maybe the 3D releases can bring it back, but for now Trek will be king.
