Something that's been gnawing at me since some of the earliest trailers is whether Kirk's friend Gary Mitchell figures in the story line. In TOS' "Where No Man Has Gone Before" they were supposed to have been long time close friends.
There is an actor (I don't his name) in the trailers that looks exactly like the young Gary Lockwood. This may be a silly question to those actually in the know but I am curious...I would love to see the "back story" there. BTW, Lockwood did not age as well as Shatner; or at least didn't have the plastic surgeons that Shatner had.

Oh my he has changed. I cannot even see a resemblance to his younger self.
The actor I believe you are referring is Karl Urban and he plays Dr McCoy. Many have speculated he may have been better cast as Gary Mitchell ![]()

no, Urban is perfect for McCoy.
The time alteration element, I believe, has changed Kirk's academy years. I believe he attends much later than he was meant to. also, Mitchell was the scoundrel of the pair, while Kirk was a by the book cadet. the new Kirk no longer needs Mitchell to get him to lighten up. |

Yeah, I see now. There was just that one shot where McCoy is in the foreground and Kirk behind him as they were apparently looking out of a window on some transport. His expression and features could have made him a doppelganger for Gary (Mitchell) Lockwood.
I love Urban's grim concept of space and space travel in trailer 2, "Space is disease wrapped up in darkness and silence." That is quintessential Leonard McCoy.

Indeed, Urban would have been perfect as Mitchell...too bad Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman elected to eliminate the character along with Number One...

So far the reviews from last night's Texas sneak premiere have great things to say about Urban as McCoy -- along with the rest of the cast. Naturally they can't all be the main characters, but Urban has been singled out more than once for nailing the traits and curmudgeon nature of Bones while adding his own flair to the role. Should be great news for Karl's fans... and perhaps those who had doubts about him too.

Yeah i feel good about him as McCoy for sure, but he could have also made a great Mitchell.
