Perhaps the best news of the greenlighting by Paramount means they're eager and willing to pay for script development -- which means they want to make a sequel sooner than later, which translates to a shorter wait period between films.
A sequel could be ready in 2 or 3 years, versus 4 or more if they only start planning for a sequel well after the film hits theaters this summer. It's also an implicit sign of confidence in the film by Paramount, which plays right back around to last year's decision to delay TREK and make it their 2009 summer tentpole release instead of holiday 2008. They showed confidence in Abrams' film during production, and continue showing it before theatrical release. Good omens.
