I don't think we'll see anything in the movie that indicates the Hobus supernova is anything other than a unique natural phenomenon.

I agree.

Just to clarify my position on this subject: I would NOT be surprised if Spock does come to his end in a "blaze of glory", but based on earlier statements and interviews there is NO indication this WILL happen.

Possibly. It may be in fact Pike or young Spock piloting the craft.
