And wouldn't it be hilarious if there weren't any, but people went back four and five times to try to find them? I know Paramount would be giggling its corporate arse off.

Now that would be one diabolically shrewd plan!

I'm sorry, but this "alternative timeline" mishagas is really taking away some of my enjoyment. Remember the third Indy movie The Last Crusade, in the beginning when they flashed back to his youth (I think it was River Pheonix)? Anyway, every time they showed something like how he got to be afraid of snakes, or how he got the scar on his chin, or how he got his hat... we all smiled because it explained things that were in line with the general continuity. This film- for me there is no continuity. I feel like anything they try to interject as an Easter egg will be lost along with the rest of the history that the "alternative timeline" changes. Inside jokes about the characters- well not really, because they aren't really the characters.

Look, as a doctor, I realize the danger of opening up old wounds, which I'm sure I am by saying this, but that's just the way I am feeling now. I actually feel less and less excited about this whole project as time goes on, the more I hear and see. I hope I snap out of it by May 8th.

I understand your concern, vuedoc, but I doubt that the characters are different beyond the inevitable changes that come with new actors. Otherwise putting Nimoy in the movie would be unwise, because it would highlight the differences between Quinto-Spock and Nimoy-Spock.
Remember "Yesterdays's Enterprise"? Many things were different, the ship, the conflict with the Klingons ... but Picard still was Picard. This will not be the Mirror Universe.

Wow. For obvious personal reasons it's great to see so much interest in a character that appeared just once in the entire series, and yet had such a history with Kirk as to be compelling enough to keep this thread going.

Gary Mitchell, played by Gary Lockwood, and Number One, played by our sorely missed ''First Lady'' of Star Trek, Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, are in my opinion two of the most intriguing and underutilized characters in all of the franchise. Such creative potential there for storytelling.

On another related note, I most certainly do not prejudge the upcoming movie sight unseen--Gary Mitchell or not. In fact having been an outspoken advocate for a reboot two years before it even became a project, I do feel that there is a rich untapped creative gold mine of material that doesn't need to rely on the old ''dog and pony show'' of alternate timelines and time travel in general...

However, like many of you, I'm more than willing to withhold any criticism until two hours after the movie starts this coming May, and to enjoy to the absolute fullest the anticipation and excitement until then.

Not to ruin the suspense, but who is that beside Kirk in the Star Trek Movie Trailer #3 at 1:25.

Cool

The one in the blue tunic who looks like Gary Mitchell's twin is McCoy.
