Not necessarily...

When we see the NX-02 Columbia being built in the orbital drydock, the name was already on her primary hull. So there is a canon precedent.

The Intrepid is mentioned but not seen in "The Immunity Syndrome"...

The Constellation is seen in "The Doomsday Machine."

The Exeter was seen in "The Omega Glory."

The Excalibur, Lexington, Potemkin and Hood were seen in "The Ultimate Computer."

Counting the Enterprise that makes 7 of the 12 Connies seen over the course of TOS.

Good memory
I think that in the movies, different types of ships worked very well, e.g. the Reliant as "minime" Enterprise or the Excelsior as fancy new ship and another Constitution class vessel would be kinda like a second main 'ship character'.
