How do we know that scene at Starfleet Academy doesn't relate to something about the Enterprise. Like a meeting for cadets going to the Enterprise? And maybe the cadets have personalized cadet uniform things. :P

Just a guess. :]

I never really saw the different insignia as very sensible or practical, it was more like an affectation by the writers, a single emblem for the whole fleet makes much more sense.

I appreciate it may make a difference to some, but it goes alongside the car as a minor element for me.

Not the TOS Enterprise uniform emblem.

Argueing patches and insignia? Great... hey how about the IDIC? You know, the symbol Roddenberry made-up just for a chance at merchandising them for a profit? Maybe there were different ship patches, you know like the US Navy doe, because Gene wanted to have several different ones to sell....

But it is strange to have the TOS Enterprise patch (see shipyard) and the TMP Starfleet logo (see CoruSan Francisco) in the same movie - as the pre-TOS Starfleet logo.

Um...No sarcasm here man, I'm actually quite disappointed, alternate universe or not. It just goes to show you that JJ and co aren't paying attention to the details, and that kind of trivializes the whole thing don't you think?
