The pace of that scene pretty much matched the pace of the whole film. Which was one of it's issues. The huge emergency that threatened Earth, but no-one really seemed in a hurry to get the mystery solved!

But the effects were perfect, and I still like the initial fly around. I don't think they should copy it in the new film, but still give the girl a good debut.

There is a real world compassion here: December 7, 1941 the band onboard the USS Arizona finished playing the National Anthem before they called GQ and manned their battle stations.

If starfleet couldn't get in a hurry to save earth why would they to save Vulcan.

I really hope they don't.

That one scene is the genesis for so many jokes and parodies since it is boring. It went so far beyond the needed establishment shot and sense of scale.

It's like trying to read Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series (on Valium).
I think what Kevin above said applies very well. 'one person's awesome is another person's yeah'. Different tastes.

Personally I like TMP flyby. If they did it every movie, it'd get old real quick. The Enterprise reveal in TWOK was much shorter, but for TMP it worked. No one had seen the Enterprise like that before, so it's nice to take a breather and enjoy it.

Yeah, with the pacing of this story, there may be no time for a lengthy intro of the Enterprise.

Not early in the film, no. But at the end...?

Considering that, as others have already said, the TMP is a cited inspiration for the new film... I'm hoping we'll see something comparable at some stage. I'm fully expecting our first glimpse of the completed ship to be fairly dramatic, even if it's not as lingering as the one it's based on.
