I think the film may show the emergence of that relationship, but it will take sequels to fully explore it.

Agreed on the speculation and references above: Spock isn't just flying off the handle randomly, this is a planned, baited confrontation designed to evoke an emotional response. Happened before in TREK, it's happening again.

Source of the outburst:

Kirk: "You've got your peanut butter in my chocolate!"
Spock: "You've got your chocolate in my peanut butter...Sir."
Kirk: "Well...Get your Vulcan hands outta my food!"
Spock: "Sir, you're behaving rather irrational."
Kirk: "And I say that you're a freak! And you need to be off of the bridge and placed in a circus sideshow!"
Spock: "Jim..."
Kirk: "Right next to the dog-faced boy!"
Spock: "NOOOO!"

I have to agree...In order to flesh out the relationship of the trio there has to be another movie.

This is one of the bits I'm looking forward to the most! I'm happy just to wait until the movie comes out

I think that McCoy never had much screen time compared to Kirk or Spock in the movies, he was always a bit more in the background, it were rather his few pointed remarks which made him shine out.
For example in TWOK he only has one big scene where they view the data about Genesis, but this scene is quite memorable.

So even though we will get no or only a small (compared to Kirk and Spock) background story of McCoy, Urban will make the few scenes of his character shine out just like Kelley did.

Man I hope so...I really don't think the McCoy character should be ...well...window dressing until it is time for him to further the plot.

I hope too that he movie does not focus on the Kirk-Spock relationship at the cost of neglecting to show us at least glances of Bones-Kirk and Bones-Spock. I might be wrong about this, but I always got the impression that Kirk and McCoy hve known each other for quite some time while the friendship between Kirk and Spock as well as Spock and McCoy were about to form during the five-year mission.
There is also the risk that Pike's mentor role cuts down McCoy's advisor role.

Very true! I had not thought about that.

Maybe it's just infulence from Nero's activites altering time? Or maybe it's Spock's reaction to the illogic that is Kirk, and their youth.
