Default Power Failure

I hate them. I just had one moments ago down here in St. George. It started out as a brown out, which lasted about 10 minutes, then it became a black out, which lasted about 30 minutes. And I spent most of those 30 min. trying to get our emergency radio-lamp to recieve radio. And at the moment, no one knows what caused the power outage. Has anyone else here experienced a power failure, and if so, what was your experience during the failure?

We've had a few here: more often than not, they were the result of the major quakes we had, which is doubly fun (not)!

Short story on that: when the Northridge quake hit at four something in the morning, I was awakened by both the shaking and the fact that my ceiling fan lights flipped on -- a rather blinding surprise from a dead sleep. I assumed it was some kind of surge or short which made them blink on, then of course the power went out.

Hours later after the power was restored (our city has great municipal service!), I went back into the bedroom to pick up all the stuff dumped on the floor... and my ceiling fan was spinning. The quake actually flipped the sideways-mounted wall switches ON! Crikey.

We've had a few heat- and wind-related outages here as well, but often of short duration. Fortunately since my city has its own DWP, we don't get folded into the rolling blackouts of larger-L.A. when energy is in high demand. Still, such brownouts happen during the day, when it's less crucial for lighting, etc. They're a temporary nuisance to be sure, but I've not had a truly bad experience with them, knock wood.
