Seriously though, here's a thought: what if...

What if it was Nero's time meddling that caused the temporal split which resulted in the "mirror, mirror" alternate timeline? IF that were the case, then J.J. would actually be adding to the canon, rather than throwing it to the four winds...

Just a thought.
That would be fine, but playing devil's advocate here, Kirk was probably driving before Nero arrived. And Nero arriving probably would not have any effect on Kirk's driving anyway.

"Who's Nero? A Romulan? Man, for some reason, I have this sudden desire to learn to drive." No, I don't think so.

That brings up another point. There's apparently 2 theories here, and one seems to be the one that people here are concerned about. That being the "step on a butterfly" deal. People are scared that Nero really will cause some "Back to the Future II" style time rift and create a Dark Trek.

That is unlikely. At least according to the other working theory. That theory is that it is actually very unlikely that anyone can cause some huge catastrophic rift in time and space by going back and doing even what you would believe to be a huge event change.

Consider the movie Fatherland. Hitler lives and Germany wins the war in this alternate timeline tale. Sounds like a huge change in history right? Wrong, things just got delayed a decade or two. The holocaust was eventually unveiled and Hitler was found out.

Actually, Hitler would have died out eventually. Just like Communism died. It would take long, but it would...... because nothing lasts for ever

BTW I get your point

Folks involved in the movie production frequently mentioned that Trek's optimism etc will be in this new incarnation of ST, so no Mirror Universe.
Our heroes playing their evil counterparts is more fun on TV, I doubt a Mirror Universe movie would work, probably not even a miniseries.

I could see a mini-series, but definately not a feature movie on the mirror universe.
