I like it when you are "nitpicky" adds spice to these threads.
To answer that question, one just has to ask oneself why GR renamed the lasers to phasers in the second pilot. Not to mention that the cannonites would go crazy over lasers as well and bash this movie they did not saw yet for being too much SW because it features lasers.
As it is impossible to please certain people, one better does not try at all while producing a MASS product.

Roddenberry--or someone under him--did some research into the actual laser technology at the time and realized that lasers couldn't have a stun setting. By renaming them phasers, Roddenberry was able to have his stun setting as well as have a weapon that was presumably more advanced than lasers anyway...

The thing about the bulkier TOS communicators was that they needed the larger size to accommodate subspace transceivers and other Starfleet hardware, which today's cell phones obviously don't have.

Wow, both those explanations make sense!

The Cage laser pistol was also used in WNMHGB and The Man Trap.

It may or may not be an overload light... also has been called a recharge light or battery low light.
It's true that the original prop did NOT have the blue jewel atop the phaser 1. It was added later, and many sources referred to it as a "low power" indicator. The MR and AA phaser replica designers wanted to remain true to the originals, which is why those models were made without the jewel.

And also in What Are Little Girls Made Of? Though I won't blame anyone for not noticing the weapon while Andrea was holding it. I was more focused on her torpedoes.
