To be honest, I'd rather this film be a 100% reboot with a loose adherence to existing Trek continuity.

What I think we might indeed be getting is the situation the original poster outlined - Nero goes back in time, changes history, timeline is subtly altered, etc. I hate all this temporal bull$hit, to be honest.

If the can pull off the time stuff without being too annoying I will be happy.

The time travel part is what's causing all the trouble, if they had just set the script fully in the 23rd Century there would be none of this 'Well, let's put it in an alternate reality because it's not how we want it to be, and we can use time travel as a reason to do that.'. It would be solidly an origin story.

Then there's a pretty good portion of Star Trek that you don't like.

Alright fine. But out of universe that's not what this film was meant to be. It's supposed to be a sort of send off episode the same way "Generations" was. Yes, "Generations" kind of sucked, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a good idea.

This story is a good way to rope in those of us who are Trekkies and do appreciate Abrams linking this to the show in more ways than one. Oh, I do declare, it does seem that Mr. Abrams cares a little bit more about canon than we thought. Oh, my.

I disagree that it's a send off for anything, it's supposed to be the story of how the TOS crew came together onboard the Enterprise prior to TOS.

I think it will be a straightforward 'there and back again to stop them from changing the past' time travel story like First Contact or City on the Edge of Forever, not one of alternate realities. It is even possible that nothing of the 24th century is shown at all.

Agreed. This temporal 'bull****' is more nerdspeak to explain away crap that doesn't really matter.

should I read this thread...does it give away movie parts....because I started to read the spoiler and I got the impression that it was talking about the actual plot of the movie.

Less "Wow, we went through that and we have to build this" and more "Well, I was going to build this (1964 TOS E), but I suddenly had a new idea to tweak it like this (2008 JJ E)"

That would mean it would also come to be titled "Constitution" Class by the Federation, but it would be an ANBE-Constitution, if I'm making my point well enough.

It recognizes that they aren't the same vessel, but they are the "same ship".

It's like Geordi: "It's like...I'm there, but I'm not!!111"

What in the Husnock is ANBE? Check here if you've read the spoiler at the start of the thread.
Changes to the design may be to allow the ship to be built on the planets surface. Widened and lengthened neck changes to the nacelles to bring the ships center of gravity to the center of the ship. The Next Gen like nacelle pylons all to compensate for gravity.

Default it's only my opinion but...

This movie will use familiar names of people, places and items from the Star Trek universe and that's all.

The characters lives and their associations will most likely be based on entirely new personal histories and definitely not take place in a parallel universe.

I believe we are seeing the rebirth of Star Trek with its own unique spin.
