Nice review. Makes me feel a bit better about the Scotty/transporter issue.

To be honest, I'm actually looking forward to it *more* when I see that Pine and Quinto aren't trying to mimic Shatner and Nimoy.

Look, Superman Returns was a flop for me because it was Bryan Singer trying to be Richard Donner (literally), and in effect, making Brandon Routh an imitation of Christopher Reeve. It was a great Chris Reeve impersonation, but it immediately made me think about that impersonation, instead of seeing Routh as Kent/Superman.

It didn't work for one second, and only made the effort even more crappy, IMO.

Knowing that it's JJ re-introducing the characters and universe to us with updated looks and new actors automatically means that I would demand the new actors aren't trying to imitate the original's acting characteristics.

I don't want Chris Pine levying stilted-tempo dialogue that reminds me of a slipping transmission because that's what all Shatner impressions sound like, even the great ones, and I certainly don't want to see a feature film that looks like a contest of best previous-actor-in-the-role impersonations.

Besides, as was pointed out earlier, Pine seems to be doing the Shatner Gangster-Lean in the captain's chair, so there's going to be more than enough TOS actor homages (wessels) to go around for every character.

Just don't...have...Chris Pine...speaking...in mock Shatner. It would beee...preposterous.

A point about Kirk and Spock: with these two more than any other of the crew, I expect the story will show the 'creation' of the Kirk and Spock we know from TOS. It won't show them 'fully formed' in their famous personalities, but how they got to become those personalities.

I agree with many: to expect Shatner's Kirk or Nimoy's Spock at this stage of the characters' lives is, in effect, asking for imitations instead of acting.

Of course Quinto's not going to act like Nimoy acts -- but if you think about it, take any one of us and place our 20 year-old selves in a room with our 80 year-old selves and then ask why the two aren't the same personality. They wouldn't be at all because the have totally different life experiences. This would be more exaggerated with Spock, if anyone.

I think it's actually a positive sign that Pine and Quinto aren't delivering the 'finished' Kirk and Spock, because it gives the film(s) room to grow into those characterizations... as the actors grow too.

I don't mind at all that Pine and Quinto aren't quite the Kirk and Spock people remember, like Mission just pointed out personalities change and the actors are trying to make the parts their own. I'm a bit dissapointed about the opinion on Quinto's spock, hopefully his best scenes weren't in the preview as I'm really looking forward to his protrail of Spock, would be a shame to see arguably the best character in TOS being the weak link of the 7 in the new film.

Quinto has the most difficult role. The most iconic. The one with the highest expectations. It might be good that this review lowered our expectations a bit. Good and the only fair thing to do.

I think everyone is watching Quinto more than Pine, and I think that must be quite a burden to have to have in the back of your mind. But it's obviously just one perception of his performance at this point, very little to go on, especially when we'll have Nimoy in the same film to compare him to. He does have the advantage!

Well It Should Not Be A Total Copy Of Shats Performance! Not Kirk.... 3/4 Of The New Kid Generation Have No Idea Who The Heck Kirk Is, So It Doesn't Matter, Really.
