The idea that Roddenberry proprosed was that no other starship was as incrediblyfamous (and history-making) as the Enterprise though and that was the reason why its insignia was chosen to represent the entire fleet.

Given that the Federation was in something of a cold war with both the Klingons and the Romulans at the time, the decision was probably more of a public relations thing than anything else.

It would appear they are just using the arrowhead as the enterprise crew and the starfleet academy instructors wear that insignia

Crazy Horse was the chief of the Lakota (also a starship name) in the late 19th century. But yeah I wouldn't like my ship to bear the name, seems a bit long winded for a starship name.

As for the insignias I'm not overly bothered either if they stay or go, can see the logic of having them for distinguishing between the different ships and would be interesting to see a different insignia for the Kelvin, but the next several hundred years of starfleet got on ok without them so I'd be fine if all bear the arrowhead.

''USS Crazy Horse'' has the same number of syllables as ''USS Enterprise''.

Oh, and a while back we had a thread where we designed insignias!

True to both of those, hadn't thought of that... Think I'd prefer Enterprise to Crazy Horse though, and definately to Sir Winston Churchchill
