I always wondered why the various Spocks in III never had a beard...

In the mirror universe they did.

Maybe during the Pon Phar ritual there is some sort of grooming rite? I know there is in other cultures here on earth.

Nope, he's alive. Why would you think him to be dead? Because of something that happened on screen in some movie? God why are you so hung up on canon? Why bother with canon when there's a good story to be told. Screw canon! Old Kirk is alive and well and cloaked with his personal Romulan cloaking device that he stole from the Romulans.

I didn't say he was dead, the new keeper of the canon did: JJ Abrams.

Funny that Abrams is being "constrained" by that bit of canon, but throwing the rest out with the bath water.

By the way, there's nothing in any of the previews or trailers that, on screen, prove that old Kirk isn't there (alive and cloaked) with old Spock.

Now seriously, there is so much general canon being observed in the trailer that such a statement is hyperbole to say the very least. Spock is a Vulcan, Kirk is from Iowa, and on and on and on.

Yes, may DETAILS may differ, but to saying all canon is being thrown out is just wishful thinking and a weak leg to stand on when making a valid argument.

Both extreme stances in this debate are highly flawed positions, as the truth resides in the moderate middle between them -- and that final 'tally' of canon history observed can't be known until next May.
