I have never been able to understand the "geek" "nerd" "loser" "loner" names that some people give Star Trek fans. I am not either of those, I am a very outgoing person, I have friends and a wonderful wife and kids, who started watching Star Trek at an early age. (neither of which became Trekkies). My wife doesn't watch Trek but she doesn't hate it either, she will go to the movie and see it the first time. If I hear people dowing Star Trek, I would defend it also. I agree that most people who jump in line to bash it, have never actually given it a chance. In Nov 07 I hosted a New Beetle gtg at my house and on night I popped in Star Trek 6 and a guy who has turned out to be my best bud fell hard for Trek. He had never watched it before and he was like a dry sponge! Since that time, he has bought all of TOS, TNG, and is going with ENT next. He told me last night in chat that he just couldn't get enough Star Trek!!!!

I have actually turned a number of people into Trek fans, they just had to give it a chance.

I guess the marketing campaign has to point out that this will be different
All of the non Star Trek fans I've shown the trailer to have said it looks really good and they must likely will go out and see it. It's not going to appeal to everyone.

In my opinion, many people don't like TV shows that are thought provoking. Trek is a drama first, then sci-fi second, in my opinion. Many, many episodes deal with moral issues and parallel our current time. Many "average" tv viewers don't like to have their own views or thoughts challenged, they prefer mindless entertainment. Many people have simply said they thought Trek was too boring. They watch a couple of minutes then change the channel.

Update: his reason is that he thinks it'll be too much fiction and he doesn't think our future will be anything like Trek.

I am hopefull our future will resemble that of Trek. I am NOT talking about the technology (although that would be nice), but the maturity of the human race. I hope we will one day set aside our various beliefs and come together as a united planet. I know that sounds rather hippie-ish (which I am NOT!!!), but our lives would be so much better if it really happened. I think first contact with sentient alien life is only a matter of time. That very well may be what spurs us to come together.

Do people watch sci-fi movies because they think that is what our future will be like? Man, think of all thos Matrix fans!! I don't want to end up a battery!

Does he only watch documentories and read in the reference section of the library.

Is his bed-time reading the phone book?

Does he read newspapers? They are more fiction than ST half the time.

Sheesh, that is some lame cop-out.

Maybe we are already IN the Matrix - Who knows for sure?

Or maybe we are just in some storage locker at Galactic Grand Central

Perhaps some people are turned off by Star Trek because of comments made like this by Trek fans. I've noticed that some people in the Trek fan community seem to think they are better then other people who don't watch Trek because if you watch Trek you are more intelligent then others. Not to mention all the cannon arguments that go on (in the end it is just fiction). I can see why non Star Trek fans maybe turned off.
