Nero is in fact a rogue romulan who oposed the unification between his people and the vulcans (see unification I & II)he built the entire vessel to go back in time destroy vulcan and re open a singularity for his ticket back via his drilling rig,in the process he encounters the unexpected , a starship vessel,the uss kelvin,he is forced to destroy it but somehow the kelvin manages to avert his plan,then he tries again only this time he has the uss enterprise to confront
