So part of my academic duties include teaching and one of the roles I volunteer for is taking nurse practitioner students for clinical time in my office, which is a lot of fun because I get to teach and they get to help me with my work. Most of the students are really cool people but just this week I met one who in addition to being a New York Yankees fan happens to love... STAR TREK! No only that, but she's partial to TOS (as am I) AND... she's a SHAT-FAN. Like, really loves the guy. So I showed her my phaser (no snickers please!) and my communicators and my McCoy medical kit and she was in heaven. This is gonna be a fun semester!

So quick follow up- Nothing that exciting for everyone, but my student who is really into Star Trek bought me a little gift for my birthday 2 weeks ago: an Art Asylum TOS phaser! And it was so timely, because the one my wife bought me last year somehow broke, so now I'm in business again! Of course, my fav will always be my MR model, tucked away safely in my office where my wife will never find out how much I realy spent on it and I will be able to keep my testicles.

What are those Art Asylum Phasers and Communicators made of? Aluminum perhaps? Or are they plastic? I always thought a real phaser, communicator or tricorder would be constructed like a first class 35mm camera, and they'd feel like a precision intstrument in your hand.

The AA phasers and communicators are all plastic, accept the antenna grid is metal. They look very realistic but they are a little disappointing in the hand.

The Master Replicas communicator is plastic, but you get the feeling that it is better made. The phaser is all metal. The P1 alone is heavier that the entire AA phaser 2. Combined, the MR P2 is very hefty- it really feels like you could kill someone with it, and not just by dropping it off the roof. I thing it's the finest made replica of all the different prop manufacturers.
