Much better ending, and the film was kind of leading up to that one Zombie/Vampire Thing being a leader, but then just dropped it.

My question is how did they drive off the island over a bridge if the bridges were blown up?

I too have pre-ordered the DVD and eagerly await the chance to view the alternative (original) ending. As far as how they got off Manhattan, well the female character that was introduced in the third act had explained that she was part of the Coast Guard and had access to (and had used) a tugboat or something. Didn’t She?

^ Good ending. Having that standard end-of-movie explosion is definitely tired out.

I pre-ordered my DVD so I'll find out later what the alternate ending was, I still like the film even with the theatrical ending. My only big problem was that the infected people looked horrible in CGI, they looked like something you would see in the "The Mummy" movies.

The problem with the ending that they did use was that you are not atached to a character in one film enough to feel emotionally moved by a tribute at the end.
If we had followed him through two seasons of television first we would have been emotionally involved enough to buy the tribute to the character and his work.

I remember the Coast Guard part, and I guess it is possible she used a ship to get off the island.

lol, but the alternate ending shows them driving across a bridge to leave the island.

I just viewed the alternative ending (the one originally filmed) …what the &*#@^^%! It was a far superior ending. It made much more sense in the context of what had transpired before. I’ll have to wait to hear the voiceover commentary to hear why the director chose the other ending. Was it studio pressure, or what? The alternative ending would have elevated the movie to near classic status. When I get my copy of the DVD I’ll only play that version for myself or friends.
