We're told that George Kirk, as Captain of the Kelvin in her last moments, saved around 800 lives. Yet only 20 shuttles escape from the vessel. That would mean an average of 40 people per shuttle. However when Captain Robau enters his shuttle on his way towards the Narada we are given a suggestion of the size and width of space available. I would estimate that it would hold around 10 men.
I then remembered that when Jim Kirk was leaving Earth in the shuttle Pike was flying, it had multiple rows of seating filled. That shuttle class could conceivably hold around 40 people. But it was a totally different model in comparison to the ones used in the Kelvin decades past, understandably. Anyway, just something that was bothering me. |

I think all of the shuttles and escape pods would have been crammed beyond their limits.

I would think that some of the pods had already been jettisoned. I know when Enterprise E's pods started popping off the ship, there were plenty of them!

I concur... I could squeeze 40 into the space of ten if I had to.

Thats was bothering me too, when Pike said "Your father saved 800 lives, including yours." To Kirk in the Iowa Bar.
There is no way those Kevin shuttles could have that number of refugees. Maybe Pike was just saying that to encourage Kirk to join Star Fleet. A Persuasion. |

I think, since Robau 's whole idea was to buy time for the evacuation, he would've taken one of the little shuttles, and leave the big ones on the Kelvin. And if I were given the choice of firey death in space or being crammed into a rescue vehicle, I think I'd cram into the shuttle with everyone else...

Maybe they had more than one size shuttle and Robau simply took a smaller one since he was going alone?

Although we only see 20 shuttles, Yes I counted them also, the medical shuttle was #37. So there may have been more shuttles and pods that we did not see.
