Default CHEKHOV! Wonderful :)

I live in Russia, and the Russians went wild when Anton Yelchin replied to Pikes query of being Chenko, Cherkoff as being

Ensign Chekov, Pavel Andreivich.

Few realize that he actually played a young brash Russian with stunning accuracy. So quit saying he hammed too much. Russians fell in love with the Russian whizkid whenever he stumbled and acted nervous. My GF agreed he was great

And for trivia buffs, A first in Trek history, Chekov utters MFer in Russian about 2-3 times in the movie. I never realised it was there in the original English version as well. The clearest one is when he successfully beams Kirk and Sulu onto the platform.

I've actually found it funny that most fans thought he was going overboard with the accent... but, knowing a few russian students here on campus...

I think they got so used to Walter K's fakey accent, they couldn't recognize a real one when they got slapped in the face with it.

Same thing with Scotty. Sorry fans, but talking with folks at the highland games, many of whom are first generation American, they all pretty much agree that Jimmy D's "brouge" was way off the mark. LOL

Totally agree! I can't believe that they were saying that Scotty and Chekov's accents were over the top. The original series accents were over the top. These accents are indeed colorful, but definitely have a grounded quality to them that lends to the authenticity of the characters.

Also - I'm just wondering, but if Uhura is supposed to be from Africa, shouldn't she have at least a slight accent?

Because in TOS Scotty and Chekov had acents and Uhura did not. Why? I have no idea.

Uhura may have come from Africa, but she could've been educated elsewhere.

With no disrespect intended in how this sounds, but think when you see an Indian (Middle-Eastern), and he/she speaks with a British accent. Even if they were born in India, their accents could be altered by where they got their formal education.

Same could've been with Uhura.

Hell, in the video game Resident Evil 5, Sheva Alomar is a character native to Africa, but she sounds like Lara Croft when she speaks.

I LOVE Sheva.

Sheva was native to Africa, but educated in America. That's why her accent is all weird. Also it's cus she's voiced by a very hot austrailian actress.

Please tell me you have Resident Evil 5 for PS3, martok. PLEEEEEEASE. I don't have a 360.

Interesting possibilities. Doesn't make Yelchin any more likeable though for me.

That is so cool. While I didn't totally lock in on the Checkov character like I did some of the others, I did leave the theatre wanting to see more of him.
