Does the original universe (everything prior to this movie's storyline: the 10 movies, TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY) still exist? And can Old Spock go back to it?

Yes, the original universe still exists, and Spock Prime can technically still go back to it (providing that he can create another universe-destroying black hole that can send him back to the exact same point in time he originally left).
For all intents and purposes though, this new universe is Spock Prime's new home--but in the original timeline he'll probably be hailed as a hero who sacrificed his life to save the Universe...

Does the original timeline exist? Yes of course.
Can old Spock go back to it? There are always possibilities but I doubt he would want to, he has a new job in this timeline, far greater than the one he had in the original timeline.

Yes, the old universe still exists. It has been filmed. We have it all on DVD, VHS and blu-ray.

theres only one universe, all spock and nero have done is change the future, in the same way Mcfly did in Back to the Future!
Theres nowhere in the film it say anything about parallel universes, I think and others who saw the film with me that old spock was talking more about the future is still going to happen as we know it but with slight changes caused by the timetravelling. McFly and the John Connor where still in the same universe but due to timetravel their futures were changed. I think some of us cant bare to think of our Trek history being messed with, but timetravelling always has its consequences and we are going to have to live with them, and get our Star Trek Encyclopedias revised :-) I read all the interviews in the lead up to the film and not once have i heard any of the three mention parallel universes or parallel timelines, all they have said esp JJA is that this is for new fans as well, so they arnt going to put people off with brain melting parallel universes/timelines and all the paradoxes that they present :-) I normally hate the timetravelling stories in ST, esp the whole ST:ENT series but i thought that it was done great in this film, easy to follow and not too many changes to the ST story really, and you never know this film and its events may have brought about some things that we take as canon :-) |

Admittedly though - the writers don't seem to have made that clear enough for everyone. If they had we wouldn't still be getting this question asked on an almost daily basis.
Strike #1 for the writing.

I agree. Some people are confused about multiple timelines in the same universe aspect.

McFly and John Conner didn't take place in the Trek universe. This did. So we really have the best of both worlds. The original timeline still exists (as evidenced by Prime Spock's very existance) and we have a whole new path that this new timeline can take us in. |
