Paramount's "Star Trek" opened at 7 p.m. Thursday on most of its 3,800 screens, grossing an estimated $7 million as of Friday morning.
J.J. Abrams' reboot of the classic sci-fi franchise currently stands as the best-reviewed movie of the year, earning a 96% ranking on Rotten Tomatoes. Last weekend, 20th Century Fox's "Wolverine" grossed nearly $5 million in midnight runs, although "Wolverine" didn't start its run until 12:01 a.m. Friday. As with "Star Trek," Par opened "Iron Man" on a Thursday night in May 2008. "Iron Man" grossed north of $4 million in Thursday evening/midnight runs on its way to grossing $102.1 million for the weekend. Based on tracking, Par, along with some of its rivals, doesn't expect "Star Trek" to come close to "Iron Man's" opening gross, or even the $85 million earned by "Wolverine" last weekend. Nonetheless, a number of films have overperformed in recent months. http://www.variety.com/article/VR111...&cs=1&nid=2854 |

It might yet come close to Wolverine. The Friday figures will be more telling.

That's because it was THURSDAY. Who goes to the movies on Thrusday, aside from us? Also, a lot of people didn't even know the movie was available for viewing on the 7th. I'm going back for the 7:30 show tonight, so I'll see how the crowds look where I am. I fully expect there to be far more people. Although, I expect the 9:30/10:00 show will be the one with the most people. |

It was a Thursday - not perhaps a big night. Fridays are better.

My nearest IMAX is fully sold out for today as well - but mine will be counted in the international gross, not the domestic one.

That's right, UK. I forget.
I think the movie will do a brisk 67 million for the weekend.

It would also beat the Final Frontier's entire run. (Let's not be discriminatory here.)
![]() Opening weekend of TREK vs previous films' entire runs: At 60 million, it will beat V and Nemesis. At 80 million, it will beat TWOK, TSFS, TUC, Generations, and Insurrection At 85 million, it will beat TMP At 100 million, it will beat , First Contact, and nip on the heels of TVH
